Thoughts from the presbytery – 21 February

Ash Wednesday this week begins the season of Lent.  Masses will be at 7:30am and 5:30pm, St. Augustine’s, Yass and 9am at St. Francis Xavier’s, Gunning.  Lent is a penitential season of prayer, self-denial and helping others.  In this way, the whole church prepares for Easter with those who are baptised and for all others to renew their baptismal commitment.  Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence (no meat).  The law of fasting binds those who have completed their eighteenth year until the beginning of their sixtieth year; the law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year.

Project Compassion is a wonderful way to express our care for the poor and boxes and envelopes are available today.

On the 14th March I will be in Bega for a wedding and I have asked Fr. Greg Beath to celebrate the Vigil Mass. As I have baptisms on the 15th March, I will be back for Sunday at Gunning and Murrumbateman.  The Saturday morning Mass at 9am will be a liturgy with Holy Communion.

After Easter I will be taking my annual holidays and will be in Timor Leste from the 20th April.
